Hobos to Street People brings new light and currency to an artistic tradition rooted in the Great Depression and continuing today–even as the inhumanity and injustice depicted by these artists continues today.”

John Lozier, Executive Director, National Health Care for the Homeless Council

“In 1964, I wrote a book, In the Midst of Plenty: the poor in America, describing what was shameful for the richest country in the world. Today, as depicted in Art Hazelwood’s Hobos to Street People, we still do little or nothing about the homeless poor and it is still shameful.”

Ben Bagdikian, Dean Emeritus Graduate School of Journalism UC Berkeley

Hobos to Street People offers a comparison of the culture and politics of homelessness as seen through artwork since the Great Depression. As the numbers of people living in poverty continues to swell, this book looks to the past for lessons for today. Artists include Rockwell Kent, Fritz Eichenberg, Jacob Burck, Dorothea Lange, Kiki Smith, Sandow Birk, Eric Drooker and many more. The text places the artwork within the history of social and political responses from the New Deal, through McCarthyism, to the rise of modern homelessness in the 1980s.
